In the Rwanda-Burundi Jesuit Province, accompanying young adults is a key apostolic priority. In both Rwanda and Burundi, young people make up most of the population and embody the promise of a brighter future. In a context shaped by economic challenges, rapid social change, the digital revolution, and a deep desire for peace and justice, they are called to become agents of transformation. The Society of Jesus recognizes their creativity, innovative spirit, and longing to live meaningful lives. For this reason, we are committed to accompanying them as they discover their vocation, develop their talents, and become women and men dedicated to the service of others.
Today, the Province accompanies nearly 6,000 young people through its various apostolic works. This mission is carried out through:
- our educational institutions
- our social centers, including Jesuit Urumuri Centre in Kigali and Yezu Mwiza in Bujumbura,
- our parishes and chaplaincies
- Ignatian youth movements such as MAGIS and MEJ, as well as choirs, youth associations, and other local initiatives.
Through these different settings, young people are invited to participate in spiritual retreats, vocational discernment programs, leadership training, volunteer experiences, and activities that promote human development, solidarity, and active citizenship. Accompaniment is always a mutual journey. As we walk alongside young people, we discover their dreams, questions, talents, and fresh perspectives on the world. Their creativity, enthusiasm, and capacity for innovation continually enrich our own mission. In return, we help them reflect on their experiences in the light of the Gospel, discern the movements of their hearts, make free and responsible decisions, and build their lives on solid values. Our goal is to form young women and men who combine professional competence, spiritual depth, and a strong commitment to serving society.
